Oil Heating

Oil heating may not be as common as it once was, but many homes in Trumbull and across Fairfield County still rely on it—especially older homes.

At MVP Plumbing, we service, repair, and replace oil-fired boilers with a focus on safety, efficiency, and long-term reliability. Whether you’re sticking with oil or looking to convert to gas or propane, we’ll help you make the best choice for your home.

How Oil Heating Works

Oil heating systems use an on-site fuel tank and burner to heat water in your boiler. That water then circulates through baseboards or radiators to warm your home—or through coils to provide domestic hot water. If you’ve got an oil tank in your basement or outside the house, you’re likely using oil for either heat, hot water, or both.

By law, tanks must now be above ground, and many homeowners are choosing to upgrade to more efficient options.

Common Oil Heating Repairs
Some of the most common issues we see with oil heating systems include:
We’re often called when customers notice strange noises, see oil pooling around the boiler, or lose heat altogether. If your system ever starts making loud bangs, rumbles, or anything unusual—it’s time to call us.
Maintenance & Service Recommendations

Just like any heating system, oil boilers should be serviced once a year—typically in the fall, right before the cold weather hits. Routine maintenance helps catch issues early, keeps the burner clean, and ensures the system is running as efficiently and safely as possible.

We offer annual tune-ups and maintenance for our customers to extend the life of their system and reduce emergency calls.

When to Repair vs. Replace

Oil-fired boilers can last around 20 years if well-maintained. But once you pass the 15-year mark, we start looking closely at the condition and repair costs. For example, if you’re facing a $2,000 repair on a 20-year-old unit, it often makes more sense to replace the system than to patch it.

We don’t upsell—we give you clear options and help you weigh the cost, age, efficiency, and risk. Sometimes a repair makes sense. Other times, replacement is the smarter long-term move.

Oil-to-Gas or Propane Conversions

We specialize in oil-to-gas conversions, one of the most common upgrades we perform. Gas is cleaner, more efficient, and often more affordable to operate. If your neighborhood has access to natural gas, we’ll make the transition easy. If not, we’ll work with a propane provider to install tanks and get your home set up properly.

If you’re using oil heat – or thinking about switching to natural gas – give MVP Plumbing a call. We’ll help you maintain your current system or walk you through your best upgrade options with honest advice and expert installation.

What is oil heating and how does it work?
  • Fuel source for the boiler. Cannot have buried tanks, must be above ground.

So oil heating is basically the fuel source for your boiler. You would have an oil tank. Well, now, by law and code, they have to be above ground. You cannot have buried tanks anymore. So you’ll have an oil tank somewhere in your house or around your house that gets refilled depending on usage. And that’s the fuel that the equipment firms either for heating or hot water or both.

  • Blocked filter
  • Burner motor

Would be probably a blocked filter because people don’t maintain their equipment or the whole burner motor itself.

  • Annually, in the fall to prepare for winter.
  • Burner will not be firing, red light blinking
  • Leaking around the boiler
Your burner will reset and go off. In other words, it’s not going to be firing. And there’ll be a little red light blinking. You’ll begin to either smell or see oil leaking around the burner itself. You might also hear loud noises like rumbling, banging, and that’s a sign of a misfire.
  • From oil to gas, YES
  • Gas to oil, probably not.
Moving from oil to gas heating is currently the most common trend. Switching 100% from oil to electric isn’t typical, but oil to gas is what most people do. Once an oil system fails, nine times out of ten, if natural gas is available from the street, people will opt to use that. In more rural areas where gas isn’t yet available, we typically arrange for a propane company to install tanks, which is still a form of gas heating. Gas systems burn much cleaner and offer far more options. Their efficiency ratings are typically around 95–97%, compared to around 80% for oil systems. They’re also quieter and much more efficient to run, with countless benefits over oil heating.
  • 20ish years minimum
  • Depends on maintenance.
Traditionally, you could expect a system like this to last at least 20 years, provided you keep up with regular maintenance. The life expectancy really does depend on how well you look after it. If you never carry out any maintenance, it’s highly unlikely you’ll see it reach that 20-year mark.
